During the precision metal fabrication process a highly important operation is our welding: whether precision welding, deep penetration welding, or multi-pass welding, all governed by the Welding Procedure Specification or WPS.
Deep Penetration - Multi-pass Welding
Precision welding is highly important in successfully meeting customer specifications during fabrication. We use robotic welding to get repeatability, allowing us to control the results.
As a world class manufacturer, everything we do with precision welding is governed by the WPS or Welding Procedure Specification. We have been certified to the CAT 7 Steps to Weld Excellence program for many years. The WPS is a primary element of the program that acts as a roadmap to structural weld excellence related to precision welding. It determines how a weld is going to be accomplished and what’s required to do a good weld in terms of: quality, penetration and size. The process eliminates any variability of operator preferences, including voltage and feed speed. Our operators are trained and tested to work within the parameters to maintain consistency, regardless of who is welding it. Each operator has a WPS on the drawing that tells them the pre-sets or parameters and prohibits any variance based on preferences. Finally, every welder has to go through a stringent control process that includes daily and weekly feedback logs. They are audited for things such as bar-feed reads, gas pressure, and size.
Seaberg's precision welding services can accomplish just about every kind of weld description including MIG, TIG, square groove, butt-weld and even torch welding. In complying with customer drawings and specs, we often find ourselves needing to perform specific weld operations like “deep penetration welding” or “multi-pass welding”. Deep penetration welding or strong welding is a large enough melt of the host metals that it may become a 100% structural join, keeping in mind that a weld is typically stronger than the parent metal. Since strength in these welds are the primary concern, Seaberg has developed a proprietary pre-heating system and that allows us to meet the strength requirements of our customers. Further, we are confident in our process that upon customer request, we will provide optional destructive testing of parts, which is also part of the WPS. In short, we will destructively test sample parts to prove they are accomplishing what the customer needs. We do this through cutting and acid etching cross-sections of the part to demonstrate that we have the root and depth penetration into the material that is required.
Multi-Pass welding is determined by weld size in the WPS Welding guidelines and is used for the maximum strength of weld joints. Seaberg Industries weld equipment is capable of multi-pass welds. Keep in mind that a standard large single-pass weld doesn’t have the strength requirement that the joint needs. But a large weld using the multi-pass welding process will produce the strength requirements and therefore the performance needed.
In our case, we also use “robotic welding” which is a great way to control the precision metal fabrication process in order to maintain repeatability for our customers. In addition, we use precision ground tooling on our presses for maximum repeatability. “High speed machining” also is a great capability that adds to our precision sheet metal fabrication expertise.
